Why do we dream ??


Yesterday i was running a 100 m race in Olympics 2020(Tokyo) and was able to break record of world's fastest man Usain Bolt by completing race in just 9.01 seconds and after taking the gold medal, i woke up and went for a bath.

A dream can be a combination of images, ideas, emotions and that usually occurs without our permission in the mind during certain stage of sleep.Many scientists are working to find the purpose of dreams.The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology.


When do dreams occur??
Dreams mainly occur in the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep,when brain activity is high. REM sleep is revealed by continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. The length of a dream can vary; they may last for a few seconds, or approximately 20–30 minutes. People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has 3-5 dreams per night, and some may have up to 7. However, most dreams are immediately forgotten. Dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. During a full eight-hour night sleep, most dreams occur in the typical two hours of REM.

Why do dreams occur??
After a great deal of scientific research and technical advancement, we still don't have an answer to why we dream. But we have many theories which tells us that why we dream
  • We dream to fulfill our wishes: Sigmund Freud proposed that all our dreams are collections of images from our daily conscious lives which relate to fulfillment of our daily wishes, urges and desire.
  • We dream to remember:For learning sleeping is good but dreaming is better.Certain learning processes can take place only when we are asleep and dreams are signals that process is taking place.
  • We dream to rehearse: Dreams with dangerous and threatening situations are very common.This theory tells that these dreams allow us to practice to survive in harsh situations in case we need them in real life.
  • We dream to solve problems: In real life with many limitations we find it difficult to solve any problem but during dreaming during sleep our brain can form limitless conditions and ways to solve any problem
Beside all these theories no one properly knows that why do we actually dream.




Is dreaming healthy??
Studies show that dreaming is good for us. It helps by supporting healthy memory, warding off depression, and expanding our ordinary limited consciousness into broader, spiritual realms.Dreaming also helps us consolidate memories and retain information.

Why some people move in sleep??
There are some people who move or do weird things while in sleep. It is because during REM sleep the electrical activity of the brain is almost the same which is during we are awake. The biggest difference is in production of chemicals like norepinephrine, serotonin, histamine is almost blocked which causes the muscles to stop moving and we don't move during dreaming but some people have disorder achieving REM atopia and move during their dreams.

Being scientific advance and with upgrading technology day by day we are able to know secrets of universe which is far away from us we are not able to know about dreams. That's a great mystery in itself. But in future we can discover the main reason of dreams until then we can just dream of it.
