What happens during Lightning ??

Maybe none of natural phenomenons has aroused as much excitement,fear and questioning in our minds as much Lightning has done.

Ancient people believed that lightning is god's punishment to those on whom he is angry.They thought it as punishment given by God Jupiter.



But what really lightning is ?? With the help of science we came to know that lightning is a natural phenomenon in which a sudden electrostatic discharge occurs.Lightning is like a giant natural circuit breaker.When the balance in atmosphere's natural electrical charge overloads,it explodes.When there is friction between two clouds then the charges between them get attracted towards the opposite charges and to maintain electric neutrality(balance) electric discharge occurs which is visible to us as lightning .

To know more about lightning we must discuss about its types.Mainly lightning is of three types:


  • IntraCloud lightning:When lightning occurs between a single cloud due to striking of positive and negative charge is called intracloud lightning.It is the most frequently occurring type.
  • Cloud-to-cloud lightning:When charges from two different clouds come in contact then lightning or spark is generated which is called as cloud-to-cloud lightning.
  • Cloud-to-ground lightning:When charges of any cloud get attracted towards charges of ground and creates lightning ,it is called cloud-to-ground lightning.
Lightning can be extremely hot up to 30,000 Celsius which is much more hotter than sun,with this much heat the air in the region gets compressed and explodes and created a loud noise which we hear during thunderstorms.This lightning flash is approximately 4 to 5 km long and 1 to 2 inch wide.,and it can carry 40,000(40 kV) to 1,20,000(12kV) volts of energy.


Why do we hear sound few seconds after the lightning ??This is because light travels at speed of approximately 30,00,00,000 m/sec where as speed of sound is 333 m/sec.If you can count up to 5 then it means that lightning has strike within 1 mile of distance because sound takes 5 sec to cover 1 miles of distance
In a year approximately 24,000 are died due to lightning,then how to be safe during lightning.It is advised to hide inside the house and avoid standing under trees and in open grounds.
And now the most awaited and interesting question:Can we use the lightning during  thunderstorm??And its answer is no,currently we are not having such a device which can be used to capture lightning and lightning keeps contact with land for a some microseconds .In future if we are able to make any device to capture electricity than we will be able to capture only few part of it.On an average lightning occurs 30,00,000 times a day but all of this doesn't strikes with land, most of the lightning occurs between clouds.
